SIDELINE SCHOOL

Stand where the story happens

One good spot beats chasing the play. Pick it from the lineup, then stay.

How to shoot it
  1. Step 1

    Don’t shoot through the fence

Chain-link and spectator rails ruin autofocus and every print. Walk to a gap in the fence, or the area the club keeps clear for parents. If you can’t get a clean lane, wait for the next restart. There will be one.

  2. Step 2

Pick a spot from their position, not from where you like to stand

Striker or winger: down the touchline, level with the edge of the box they attack in this half. Midfielder: halfway, slightly toward their attacking goal. Keeper: level with the edge of their box, at an angle so you see the face and the ball. Stay behind the spectator line, and never stand behind a goal: that’s where missed shots go. Switch ends at half-time.

  3. Step 3

Keep the sun behind you, or find open shade

Sun in the lens silhouettes everyone. Late-afternoon games are a gift — golden hour is real on a rec field. Midday: stand so the sun hits their face, or wait for a cloud.

Pro tip

Commit to one spot per half. The photos that look “lucky” are the ones where you were already there.
